Accessories to buy alongside a new carpet
You’ve spent ages choosing a carpet – looking at different brands, various styles, thicknesses, colours, prices. And finally, you’ve settled on the perfect one for your space.
Now it’s time to think about carpet accessories.
Before you put your feet up and start arranging a carpet fitter, there are some items you still need to buy. Just a few small extras, that will have a big impact on the final look and feel of your carpet and ensure it lasts for as long as possible.
Here we’ve rounded the complete ‘new carpet installation’ shopping list.
Take a look and start adding the essentials to your basket.
Our ‘new carpet’ shopping list
1. Carpet underlay
It may be hidden beneath the surface, but carpet underlay is worth its weight in gold.
Whilst some underlays can (technically) last for up to 25 years or more, generally speaking, the older it gets, the less effective it becomes – which could affect the overall finish of your new carpet. In most cases, it’s therefore worth replacing the underlay every time you update your flooring.
Not only will a high-quality underlay enhance the look of your chosen carpet, it will significantly improve its performance – increasing underfoot comfort, boosting sound and heat insulation, protecting against daily wear and tear and extending its lifespan by up to 50%.
Without it, you’d certainly notice a difference in the final results of your project.
In our opinion, choosing the right underlay is far more important than picking out the carpet itself. And our current no.1 recommendation is Wilsons Plushwalk 12mm.
Made from a luxury ‘bounce back’ memory foam, this is the industry’s gold standard – the perfect choice for pretty much all home and commercial projects. And available for just £6.99 per m2.
However, if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, Cloud 9 Cumulus, Tredaire Dreamwalk and Super 8mm PU Underlay are all good alternatives.
2. Carpet grippers
Already got them?
Over time, the sharpness of the nails can start to fade and become slightly blunt – and after many years of prior use, they may be incapable of holding a thick, plush carpet securely in place.
Unless your existing carpet grippers are in an unusually good condition, these should also be replaced every time you fit a new carpet – and are another essential purchase to add to the list.
Here at Carpet Underlay Shop, we stock a diverse range of gripper rods, including pre-nailed wood, concrete and dual-purpose grippers – with a style to suit all subfloor requirements and room sizes.
These are all very affordably priced, easy to install, and will provide the level of tension required to keep the fabric of your new carpet taut – preventing any unwanted movement and creating a smooth, professional finish.
3. Carpet metals
The last touch that often goes forgotten.
Carpet metals can make a huge difference to the results of your flooring project. Placed along the threshold, they create a seamless finish from one room to the next and will enhance the final look of your carpet – whilst holding it securely in place, removing any bumps and improving safety.
There are several types of carpet door bar to choose from, including:
- Single-edged bars - with grips on just one side, typically used to join carpet to vinyl.
- Double-edged bars - with grips on both sides, used to connect carpet to carpet.
- Z-section bars - used to create a safe transition from carpet to tiles, wood or laminate.
All of which are currently available in our store, with prices starting from just £4.99. And thanks to our wide selection of sizes and finishes – including silver, grey, gold, bronze and black – you’re bound to find a metal to complement your new carpet.
4. Entrance matting
Entrance matting is a worthwhile addition in busy areas, particularly where people will be stepping in from the outdoors (e.g. through the front door of your home straight into the lounge).
It provides the perfect balance of style and durability.
Made from 100% polypropylene with a tough triple-ridged surface, it benefits from an incredibly robust texture and successfully scrapes away dirt and debris from your shoes when entering the property. Yet, it still has a smart appearance that won’t detract from the look of the carpet.
Again, we have a wide range of entrance barrier mats to choose from, as well as complementary matwell frames. All of which are of the highest possible quality, guaranteed to last and come in a variety of popular colours and finishes. Starting from just £5.15 for a 0.5 x 1m door mat.
5. Carpet fitting tools
If you’ve decided to take the DIY installation route, there are a number of key carpet fitting tools that you’ll require. Many of these items are standard tools that you may already have in your home tool box. But if not, we have an extensive collection available to buy in our store, including:
- carpet tuckers
- carpet stretchers
- carpet shears
- carpet glue and adhesive
- utility knives
- hammers
- tape measures
