Artificial grass – a savvy choice for the winter

Snow. Frost. Storms.

Let’s face it, this winter is certainly taking its toll on natural grass.

Harsh weather conditions can cause untold damage. From unsightly discolouring and bare patches to sogginess and muddy puddles, we’re guessing your much-loved lawn has definitely seen better days – and the garden has been strictly off-limits.

It’s frustrating and disappointing and a high-maintenance job to keep on top of the damage. But the good news is, it doesn’t have to be this way.

You just need to upgrade to artificial grass, instead.

As a full-blown advocate of fake turf, here we explore why it can be a savvy choice for the autumn and winter months. Read on to learn more, make the switch and – by this time next year – we promise you’ll be feeling much less frustrated, and only a tad bit smug.

Benefits of artificial grass in the winter

1.     Minimal maintenance

Looking after real grass is a never-ending task.

Even in the winter, it still grows and will need mowing. It’s likely to need watering and feeding still. Ideally, you should weed and aerate it regularly. Plus, to prevent choking of the grass, it’s a good idea to remove debris – such as leaves and mulch – as quickly as possible.

i.e. it’s hard work, and work that nobody wants to do in the cold, dark, rainy conditions.

So why not save yourself the trouble?

By contrast, an artificial lawn requires little to no maintenance to stay in prime condition – even during the winter months. At most, you’ll just need to remove debris as and when required. Perhaps brush the blades once in a while to ensure they stay upright and soft underfoot – but that’s it. Your garden can continue to look neat and tidy, without having to face the elements.

2.     Evergreen lawn

The grass is always greener on the other side…especially when you have the artificial variety!

Natural turf gradually loses its colour as the seasons change, often turning yellow or brown throughout the winter months. But the same is certainly not true for fake grass.

Made from robust multi-coloured fibres with excellent UV resistance, it will stay the same vibrant green it is at any other time of the year. And there’s no need to worry about the inclement weather tarnishing its lush, authentic appearance and stripping away its colour.

3.     No winter kill

Artificial grass is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.

It isn’t susceptible to winter kill, and is much more durable than real grass – successfully holding its own against rain, snow, frost, ice, wind and sub-zero temperatures.

As such, you won’t start to notice any balding or patchiness when the weather takes a turn for the worst. It won’t crack or deform if it freezes, particularly if you avoid walking on it in these conditions. And even in the face of persistent, torrential rain, it’ll stay mud-free and fully functional.

4.     Excellent drainage

Sick of your garden lawn being a soggy, water-logged mess?

It’s fair to say, real grass doesn’t cope well in wet weather. Poor drainage can easily lead to large puddles, or in some cases, even flooding – creating a lot of mud and leaving the garden unusable. And it can be very difficult to bring the sodden grass back to life come spring.

Artificial grass, on the other hand, doesn’t have this problem.

As it’s permeable, rainwater is able to drain away quickly – through both the grass itself and the artificial grass underlay underneath. Puddles are unlikely to form on the surface and it’s much less susceptible to waterlogging and flooding (even in the event of heavy rain).

Even if some water does manage to build up, this will disappear quickly – and, once the rain eventually stops, artificial grass tends to dry much quicker than natural grass. Meaning, no soggy toes when you take the bins out!

Best artificial grass underlay

Made from memory foam, with an advanced water hole drainage system already installed. Not only will this improve the look and feel of your artificial lawn, it protects against day-to-day wear and tear (particularly that caused by extreme weather conditions), facilitates speedy water drainage and encourages the grass to bounce back (e.g. after being flattened by snow).

Available for just £67.50 per roll, it’s a wise investment for any home-based project.

So why not take a look and switch out your real turf for fake turf this winter? That way, it’ll all be done and dusted in time for the summer months. And by this time next year, worrying about the impact of severe winter weather on your much-loved lawn will be a thing of the past!
